I loved warming the yarns in the plants that I harvested in my garden and the surrounding areas where I walk each day, but my elbows would be close to knocking off garden pots, and the trowels were always there to remind me that I had weeding to do. Working from home was starting to look a little dusty, and I wanted a place where I could make my dyes up in a well ordered, welcoming place that reflected in the final product; the yarns that we all love to enjoy on our needles. In a world that is outpacing itself with AI designed fashion, clothes that are mass produced out of fossil fuels, and the endless stream of images that are shared through social media, the idea of investing in a place where life is slowed down does sometimes feel slightly crazy. When you are choosing your yarns, have a think about where they are coming from around the globe. Here in the UK, we are blessed with some of the highest quality wool in the world, and they are blended with skill and knowledge at mills around the country, and are created with the final product in mind, whether that is socks for your hikes, or sweaters to keep you warm. Sustainable yarns are ones that cost the earth very little. The use of plastics and high chemical dyes in yarns cost the planet in water and fossil fuel, as acrylic is pure plastic. Water runoff from industrial dye vats for clothing pollute river systems and cause a huge amount of health concerns for the local residents. We have known for years that the fashion industry contributes 10% of the carbon pollution each year, and the yarn industry is part of this. We have enough material of the highest quality in the world to provide for all our knitting and creating needs. When we choose to buy British Wool, we are also supporting sustainability and farming practices that are traceable, and with the knowledge that the sheep have been looked after in a socially responsible manner. We can’t buy wool from around the world with the same assurances, or farming principles. Once we take our wool socks off our feet, all we have to do is air them out, and the wool will remain odor free through its antibacterial qualities, (helping us cut down on our laundry tasks). Wool is also incredibly hard wearing and can withstand a lot of use, rather than plant based products like linen and cotton, which don’t have lofty cuticle fibres that connect together to form a fabric that is up to the job. Walking in shoes, boots, or Egyptian flip-flops, is heavy wear and tear for any fabric, but wool is more than up to the task, which is why it has always been the go-to choice for socks throughout time. The fibres are not put through a second combing process that aligns them to make the smooth, silky worsted yarns. Instead, they are left in a more textured state before being spun. Woollen spun has a natural ability to create extra insulation, as it traps the air within the interconnecting fibres, which also help to create a fabric that can withstand a lot of miles in a pair of walking boots. The yarn is put through a spinning process that gives it a lot more twist than you would find in a skein of sweater yarn. The high spin starts the durable nature of sock heels before you even cast your project onto your needles, as it helps the interlocking cuticles connect before they are knitted. There is quite simply no need to add nylon to sock yarn, and it is a myth that it adds extra stability or durability that wool cannot offer. As nylon is a plastic compound, it has a negative impact on the function of wool’s natural state. Rather than allowing wool to wick moisture away from our skin and keep us warm, the coating it has over wool’s cuticles means that sweat stays in our sock, and insulation is taken away as the natural fibres can no longer trap air. Knitting socks may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there is a need to start looking at the content of the sock yarn we knit with, as well as for the socks that we purchase from the shops. It’s a wonderful fibre for socks; a medium wool in the same class as Romney, it is known for its softness of touch, durability and flexibility, which means it feels wonderful to knit with, as well as wear! It is naturally creamy white and is a perfect clear base for my natural dyes, which I collect from the plants close to where the sheep roam. I have chosen to blend the Llanwenog with a gentle touch of 10% Shetland, both wools being sourced from fleeces that originate within just three miles of my home. The Shetland wool has a soft crimp and silky texture, offering an added lustre to the yarn and your finished socks. For the past year I have been talking with my local Welsh mill about how we can spin with the high twist that enables your heels and toes to stay strong. I do see hope on the horizon with the younger generation seeking them out; TikTok videos on visible mending are trending, and Instagram reels about how to sew on buttons are more popular than ever. It is a way of taking time out of our day to invest in something that means a lot to us; whether it’s a hand-knitted item, or one that you purchased in a store, the time you take to look after it is an investment in caring for the whole process of that garment before it reached your wardrobe. Once you have filled your sink with tepid water and added a ph neutral wool soap, you can plunge your socks, sweaters, hats and scarves in and just leave them there for a while. I tend to potter off and do something else; there’s no point looking at it! Just like a washing machine, you can go about your day and return in a little while. Drain, rinse and gently squeeze the water out (avoid rubbing the wool, or you will get felt), and then lay it on a dry towel before rolling it up like a burrito on the floor and walking on it! This allows as much water as possible to be soaked into the towel before popping your garment flat on either a drying rack, or another towel on the floor, giving it a little re-shape to make sure it dries to the correct shape. With 100% wool socks, you don’t need to wash them every time you wear them. Wool allows your feet to breathe, and as it regulates temperature for you, your feet stay nicely warm or cool depending on your environmental needs. You sweat less in wool, and as the fibres naturally wick the sweat away from your feet, all you need to do is air the socks out once you’ve worn them. This is where sock blockers help. Wool socks tend to be washed by hand when you feel like they need it (rather than a designated routine), and are dried on the blockers to keep the shape, or simply pegged to a washing line. We take the time to care for so many things around us. Gardens are tended, meals are prepared, homes are looked after, and as we make the space for these things to happen, we allow them to heal our souls at the same time. Maybe it is time to start reframing how we look at our laundry? In this blog I want to share with you not only my passion for natural, pure wool, but offer you my thoughts about super-wash wool and the space it takes up in our environment, as well as in our homes. As I pass my hands through the fleeces that come my way, they tell me so much. The fleece’s raw nature tells of stories the sheep have gone through, braving all weathers and terrain as they roam around the local Welsh hills where I live. I connect with the fibres; soft crimps at the base, and rugged tips. Lanolin comes off onto my fingertips, giving me a gift of its natural barrier against harsh elements, including its water resistant power. However, some breeds give us a softer fleece than others. Much like our fingernail cuticles, it protects the sheep from the elements. When it rains or snows, the cuticles and lanolin combine to provide a barrier against water. They also help with temperature regulation, so the sheep can stay warm when they are on the mountains in the snow during the winter, whilst they are cool in the summer (especially after their spring sheer). The overlapping micro-scales that the cuticles produce allow for fibre alignment, so that each can run over the sheep’s body without producing dreadlocks. The sheep is completely protected through the fleece that it grows, and over the centuries shepherds have learned how to breed their flocks to enhance the natural qualities of the fleece.
